The Backstory

For over 20 years, SJI has been working with local churches to share Jesus. Over that time we have created courses, toured events, hosted training days and led missions that have served countless churches across the UK. In 2022, we changed tack. Rather than working ad hoc, we chose to work with local churches in a more intentional way; working with individual churches over a two year period.

“As a church we have been inspired and encouraged by the Emmaus programme. On a personal level people feel more confident and have increased their awareness of opportunities to share their faith in their everyday lives and we are now hearing testimonies each week of God-conversations. We are seeing the first fruits of people coming to faith through the Emmaus programme in our church and we know it will serve us well for years to come.”

Malcolm Patten, leader of Blackhorse Road Baptist Church

This was the launch of the Emmaus project. Many of the churches we have been working with have grown numerically; have seen people come to faith; and the culture of the local church become more missional.

The Opportunity

More than offering resources and pre-packaged events, the Emmaus Project works alongside your local church to help embed faith sharing into all that you do. We have found that when local churches have an external viewpoint from a seasoned evangelist, they get a unique perspective that helps the local church become more effective in sharing Jesus.

The Emmaus Project is a tailored two year programme where a Mission Catalyst, with years of experience in evangelism and church leadership, comes alongside your church and acts as a coach. Their role will be to work closely with you, keeping track of your plans, delivering content, hosting conversations and connecting you with helpful resources. Alongside our pool of resources, we also utilise resources from other mission agencies.

The hope is that the Emmaus Project will help local churches see both new people come to faith and a deepening of the faith of church members as they become more confident in sharing Jesus.

“Share Jesus have brought the greatest blessing to the forefront of our thinking, partnering along with Jesus, sharing his story is truly something to be excited about. Over the 3 weeks our Mission Catalyst spent with us midweek many folk were moved and encouraged to take positive steps forward in sharing their faith with renewed vigour. We look forward to the coming season as we journey together in partnership to see both God’s Word and Kingdom multiplied in creative ways.”

Holy Trinity Church Weston-Super-Mare Leadership Team

“We have found the new Emmaus initiative highly relevant. Church members recognise the need and are excited about it and it is flexible in the use of its material.”

Cheddar Valley Community Church Leadership Team

“Working with Andy and the SJI team on the Emmaus project is having a wonderful impact in our church: We are becoming more confident in sharing Jesus, more naturally and with greater ease. Every week we are hearing stories of how the Holy Spirit has prompted people to share Jesus with others, and the fruit of this is so encouraging. We deeply appreciate how they are encouraging and guiding us in our journey to being more intentional and effective in reaching out to our communities and making disciples.”
