Leswidden Retreat
Where?
Leswidden Retreat is located just outside Leswidden, by the village of St Just, near Penzance, Cornwall. Land’s End is not far away and there are stunning views of it from the property.
Purpose?
The site is currently on loan to SJI for development as an ‘escape from it all’ especially focussing on the needs of young people and those from urban areas. Many visitors have found it to be a place where God has spoken to them.
Thanks …
Over the last three years committed volunteers have given substantial time into making the property wind and water tight. The derelict buildings were made safe and areas cleared for camping and caravans. The farmhouse serves as a base for cooking, socialising and a small amount of accommodation. The stone barn has been a welcome retreat for reflection, prayer and Bible study. Lots of good fun has been shared and some lovely friendships made.
Facilities?
If you are in need of an antidote to modern society then this might be the place for you. The composting toilet is clean and effective, and the lack of running water provides sobering thoughts about the millions in our world who cannot just switch on a tap. A neighbouring caravan site serves the Retreat with access to drinking water and showers whilst an on site well is being connected. Due to this work we are currently suggesting that small children do not visit the site.
Locality …
Support from the church in St Just is invaluable. Security is maintained, as well as provisions and access supplied by a local minister and his family, for which SJI is very grateful. It is hoped that visitors to Leswidden will similarly be a blessing to the church.
The St Just ‘Lafrowda’ festival, held annually on a Saturday in mid July would be a good focus for anyone wishing to make plans for 2010. The local church is always present and visitors to Leswidden Retreat could take an active part in their mission.
Activities?
Leswidden provides a great space for prayer, reflection, practical work and time off. In the last three years we have held three Boot Camps and working parties to tackle the buildings, as well as hosting quiet times for individuals and small groups. The local countryside is full of interesting places and is well suited to walking and cycling holidays.
You?
If you would like to know more about this project please contact us. We have an extremely small budget and would welcome any donations towards costs or ‘in-kind’ building supplies. However, at this stage in our development we would especially value the feedback from your prayers.
Interpretations on the following message would be of value, especially as we negotiate with the owner the future of the retreat:
‘I have hand my hand on this place for a long time but nobody knew it. Now is the time for this to be revealed. If you will be faithful to hold this place for me then I will build the house and my glory will be revealed.’ (Father God)
Costs?
If you wish to use the retreat SJI ask for £7 per person per day, in order to cover overheads and to contribute towards the ongoing development plans. This price includes camp-beds (up to eight people), caravan space for another six, basic utensils, electricity (fridge, freezer, microwaves), and gas for the camping stove, but does NOT include either food or fuel for the log burner (although wood is often available).
